Head and neck trauma

Injuries to the teeth, jaw and face.

Falls, road accidents, sport and fights can break or knock out teeth, cut the mouth and fracture the jaw. Dental Artistry treats injuries to the teeth and mouth, with visiting oral and maxillofacial surgeons for the jaw and face, and Dr. Abeda Parveen for replacing what was lost. Call before you come.

Go to a hospital emergency department first if

A blow hard enough to break teeth can also injure the head or neck. Do not come to the dental clinic first if any of these is true:

  • The person was knocked out, even for a moment, or is confused, very drowsy or vomiting
  • There was a fit, or there is a severe headache
  • Blood or clear fluid is coming from the nose or the ears
  • Vision has changed, or there is neck pain, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs
  • Breathing or swallowing is difficult, or bleeding does not stop with firm pressure

What to do straight away

  • A knocked-out adult toothPick it up by the white crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it for a few seconds in milk or cold water. Push it back into its socket and bite gently on a clean cloth, or keep it in milk if that is not possible. Come to a dentist at once: the first hour matters most. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back.
  • A broken toothKeep any pieces in milk or water and bring them with you. Rinse the mouth with warm water, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free chewing gum if it cuts the tongue.
  • A loosened or pushed-in toothDo not try to move it. Bite gently on a clean cloth and come in the same day.
  • A cut lip, tongue or gumPress on it with a clean cloth for ten minutes. A cut that is deep, gaping or still bleeding needs to be seen.

Signs of a jaw or facial fracture

Any of these after a blow to the face needs an X-ray:

  • The teeth no longer meet as beforeBiting feels wrong, or the mouth will not open or close properly.
  • Pain, swelling or bruisingAround the jaw, the cheekbone or the eye, or pain in front of the ear when moving the jaw.
  • NumbnessOf the lower lip and chin, or of the cheek and upper lip.
  • A step in the line of the teethOr bleeding from the gum between two teeth after the injury.

How injuries are treated

  1. Examination and X-ray

The teeth, mouth and jaw are examined, and digital X-rays show cracks in the teeth and roots and breaks in the bone.

  2. Saving the teeth

Loosened or replanted teeth are held with a light splint while they settle, broken teeth are rebuilt, and a tooth whose nerve is damaged may need root canal treatment.

  3. Cuts and fractures

Cuts inside the mouth are stitched. A jaw or facial fracture is treated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon; when it needs an operation, that is usually done in a hospital.

  4. Replacing what was lost

Once healed, missing teeth can be replaced with an implant, a bridge or a denture, and Dr. Abeda Parveen makes prostheses for parts of the face or jaw that cannot be rebuilt.

Still have a question?

Ask the clinic directly. No question is too small.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the white crown, not the root, rinse it for a few seconds in milk or cold water if it is dirty, and push it back into the socket, biting gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk. See a dentist at once; the first hour gives the best chance of saving it. Baby teeth are not put back.
Should I go to the dentist or the hospital after a head injury?
Go to a hospital emergency department first if the person was knocked out, is confused or vomiting, has a fit or a severe headache, has blood or clear fluid from the nose or ears, or has neck pain, weakness, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Broken teeth can be treated once those have been ruled out.
How do I know if my jaw is broken?
Common signs are teeth that no longer meet as they did, pain when biting or moving the jaw, swelling and bruising, numbness of the lip or chin, and a step in the line of the teeth. A jaw fracture is confirmed with an X-ray.
Can a broken front tooth be saved?
Often, yes. A chipped or broken tooth can usually be rebuilt with a filling, a veneer or a crown, depending on how much is broken and whether the nerve is involved. Bring any broken pieces with you.
Who treats jaw fractures at Dental Artistry?
The oral and maxillofacial surgeons on the clinic's visiting team. Fractures that need an operation are usually treated in a hospital.
